Indonesia Strengthens South-South Cooperation Towards Sustainable Creative Economy

Badung, 3 September 2024 – Indonesia reaffirms its commitment to strengthen South-South Cooperation. This is also a strategic step towards the Golden Indonesia Vision 2045.

The Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy/Head of the Tourism and Creative Economy Agency, Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno stated this following a bilateral meeting with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), represented by the Secretary General of UNCTAD, Rebeca Grynspan Mayufis.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Minister Uno's working visit to attend the High-Level Forum on Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships (HLF-MSP) 2024 and the 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum (IAF) Joint Leaders Session 2024, in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Monday (2 September 2024).

"Discussions with UNCTAD confirmed Indonesia’s significant growth potential in the creative economy, investment, and trade sectors. We must seize this opportunity to strengthen Indonesia's position in the global market, especially among Global South countries," said Sandiaga.

The meeting between the two parties is part of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy's commitment to implementing "UN Resolution 78/133" which focuses on the creative economy’s role as the main driver of sustainable development.

Minister Uno added that UNCTAD will continue to support Indonesia in strengthening its creative economy sector, notably through the growing South-South cooperation.

"Trade and investment between South-South countries are now increasing, even surpassing North-North relations. This is an excellent opportunity for Indonesia to market our creative economy products to other developing countries, including Africa," he added.

UNCTAD also extended an offer to Indonesia to host the UNCTAD Ministerial Conference in 2025. This is viewed as an strategic opportunity for Indonesia to demonstrate its commitment and contributions to advancing the creative economy and sustainable development on a global level.

With these steps, Indonesia continues to strengthen its position as a leader in sustainable creative economy development, opening new opportunities for international cooperation and contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Also in attendance at the meeting were Deputy for Resources and Institutions, Martini M. Paham; Deputy for Digital Economy and Creative Products, Neil El Himam; and Director of Trade, Industry, Commodities, and Intellectual Property of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ditya Agung Nurdianto.
